Darina Žurková is a composer, audiovisual artist and performer (voice, piano, electronics) originally from the Czech Republic.
She graduated in Composition and Piano Performance at Janacek Conservatory in Ostrava (2010) and received her Master Degree in Composition from Janacek Academy of Music and Performing Arts in Brno (CZ) (2015) where she studied with Ivo Medek. During that time she completed a one-year internship at Escola Superior de Música, Artes e Espectáculo in Porto (PT) where she studied Composition with Dimitris Andrikopoulos.
In 2015 she was chosen as a resident of Ostrava Days 2015 Institute where she took individual lessons with Alvin Lucier, Christian Wolff, Phill Niblock, Bernhard Lang, Jennifer Walshe and George Lewis. She has also participated several times in International Courses for Composers and Percussion Players in Trstěnice (CZ). In 2016 she studied the Composer-Performer Programme at California Institute of the Arts in Los Angeles (USA) with David Rosenboom.
She is continuing her PhD studies at JAMU Brno, her research is focused on granular synthesis from timbral perspective. As part of her PhD studies, she also teaches courses in Theory of Composition and has designed a course titled Creative Electronics in Musical Performance for musicians at JAMU Brno. Since 2017, she has been based in The Hague, currently as a Research Associate at the Royal Conservatoire of The Hague – the Institute of Sonology (NL).
She is a composer-performer in several ensembles and she also founded a platform AMBI [ VAL ] ENTSPHERE which focuses on experimental and alternative music and interdisciplinary projects across genres, cooperating with various artists across different artistic fields. Darina also works as an orchestrator for film music and her own film music came mostly from cooperation with student filmmakers from UTB Zlín, one of which was nominated for the Magnesia Award for Best Student Film 2015 (CZ). Her compositions have been performed by the ensembles as PKF – Prague Philharmonia (CZ), Moravian Philharmonic Olomouc (CZ), Scordatura Ensemble (NL), Ensemble I&D (PT), Symphonic Orchestra JKO (CZ), ISHA Trio (CZ), et al. and at various concerts and festivals within Europe and USA.
