darina žurková is a composer, performer and audiovisual artist born in Czechoslovakia, currently based in The Hague, The Netherlands
Her doctoral research focused on timbre as a phenomenon and the process of granulation brought her to explore the core of the material (in a wide range of meanings) and ways of its transformation. Those ideas are bound to the concept of ‘de/re(con)structure’ within her work in sound art, experimental music, happenings and interdisciplinary projects. In her solo projects the elements of live electronics, installations, sculptural objects and eco-activism intertwine with performance art. As an active musician she often uses ‘extended voice’ and ‘inside piano’ combined with electronics as a form of expression and enjoys working with text.
She is involved in several projects, often collaborating with dancers and artists across different genres and fields which led her to establish a platform AMBI [ VAL ] ENTSPHERE focused more on experimentation with visual and audiovisual media.
Her compositions and projects have been performed by ensembles as PKF – Prague Philharmonia (CZ), Moravian Philharmonic Olomouc (CZ), Scordatura Ensemble (NL), Ensemble I&D (PT), ISHA Trio (CZ), et al. and have been presented at various concerts and festivals in Europe and USA.
Darina graduated in Composition and Piano Performance from Janacek Conservatory in Ostrava (CZ, 2010) and holds her master’s degree in Composition from Janacek Academy of Music and Performing Arts in Brno (CZ, 2015). She completed an internship at Escola Superior de Música, Artes e Espectáculo in Porto (PT, 2013-14), a DMA internship within the Composer-Performer Program at California Institute of the Arts in Los Angeles (USA, 2016) and the PhD internship at the Institute of Sonology, the Royal Conservatoire of The Hague (NL, 2017-18). She also completed several international residencies – among others – Ostrava Days 2015 Institute. She continues her doctoral studies at JAMU Brno, currently as a Research Associate at the Institute of Sonology.
